Gerry Sapanaro, 76, owner of Moriches Bay Realty, has immersed herself in the life of Center Moriches.

How long have you lived in Center Moriches?
I have lived here for 11 years, but my business has always been in Center Moriches. I have been owner for 21 years, prior to that I was manager. I started working here in 1980 under the former manager, while I was living in Shirley. I had lived there for 44 years prior to moving.

Why did you move to Center Moriches?
An opportunity came up and both my husband and I decided it was time to make a move. Our son was married, so he was established. The opportunity was a property, with a house on it but it had to be completely renovated. The location was what we wanted.

How would you define the character of Center Moriches and its people?
I think it’s special, very special. Its proximity to the water and that it is a sidewalk town make it a very nice place to live. The people are very nice, supportive and want to be involved as a whole and take pride in the community.

What are some of the areas or organizations you are involved with?
I am very involved with the chamber of commerce and was the past president. I have held all positions in the chamber. I am the vice president of the Downtown Beautification of Center Moriches. I have put together the journal which funds the St. Patrick’s Day Parade. I am also the chairman of the Spring Fair and the co-chairman of the Fall Fair.

What keeps you here?
I enjoy working with people. Being in this business you have the opportunity to meet new people everyday and closure is when you sell a property and buyer and seller both have smiles. I am a people person and that’s a big part of keeping me here. I do give a lot of my time to the town but I enjoy it.

What do you enjoy about this village?
There is something going on all the time. We have the spring and fall fairs, the St. Patrick’s Day Parade. We have summer concerts and the rotary has the duck barbecue.
