An apparent narrow victory for Amityville Trustee Nick LaLota over challenger Wesley "Andy" Powell in Tuesday's election will be subject to a recount, the village clerk said in an email to village officials Wednesday.

After discussion with the Suffolk County Board of Elections, clerk Diane Sheridan wrote: "The recanvass is to be conducted by the county," with elections commissioners contacting candidates and Sheridan next week.

Tuesday night's count showed LaLota with a 1,146-1,064 vote lead over Powell.

Mayor Jim Wandell appointed LaLota to office last year. LaLota and Powell were running in a special election to fill the seat of former Trustee Peter Casserly, who resigned with a year remaining to his term.
