Residents of a West Babylon neighborhood on Monday voiced concerns to the Babylon Town Planning Board over a 7-Eleven that may be built near their homes.
An application has been received by the town for a 2,874-square-foot 7-Eleven to be built at 550 Straight Path, currently the site of a service station. Neighbors from adjacent 7th Street and 6th Avenue as well as nearby Herzel Boulevard turned out for the public hearing, raising concerns about traffic, parking, trash and security. Residents also pointed out that there is already a 7-Eleven just a half-mile north on Straight Path. “We don’t need a 7-Eleven every two blocks,” Tina Katz said.
An attorney for the company, Greg Alvarez of the Amato Law Group in Garden City, told the board that 7-Eleven is “very attuned to the local needs at its various locations” and promised to look into the concerns. But board chairwoman Patricia McMahon voiced displeasure that the company had not met with residents before the public hearing.
“Normally there’s a meeting with the community beforehand, which makes things easier; but we are where we are,” she said.
McMahon requested further information on traffic and other issues brought up by the residents. She said the record will remain open on the application until Feb. 3.
