Riverhead Town Supervisor Sean M. Walter is urging the Riverhead Planning Board and Planning Department to “usher in a new era of openness and inclusiveness” by creating a public comment portion at all town Planning Board meetings.
“I believe the public has a basic right to be heard at Planning Board meetings just as they are heard at Town Board meetings,” Walter said in a news release issued late Wednesday afternoon. "Today, I call upon [Planning Board] Chairman Dick O’ Dea to create a public comment period at Planning Board meetings so that all voices can be included in the mix when we make the huge decisions that will affect the character of our community for years to come.”
The release stated that during the previous administration the town board shifted some site plan review functions to the Planning Board, and claimed that there is no provision for public comment at planning meetings.
The release was sent by e-mail at 4:45 p.m. The Planning Department was closed for the day and unavailable for comment.
