The Arbors Assisted Living Communities will hold free seminars next week on Aid and Attendance program pension benefits for which veterans may be eligible starting Monday at The Arbors at Hauppauge.
The benefits are specifically for veterans who served during wartime, not necessarily in combat, and who are homebound or residents of assisted-living communities, said Pat Yngstrom, The Arbors’ veterans liaison. There’s also a clause for surviving spouses of veterans, he said.
The seminar will go over new rate increases that took effect this year for the pension benefit, as well as eligibility requirements and the application process, Yngstrom said.
Though the benefit has been available since the 1950s, it wasn’t widely known until 2006 when the Veterans Affairs issued a news release about it, he said.
“It’s a need-based benefit .?.?. Your monthly medical expenses must outnumber your monthly income,” said Yngstrom, adding, “The entire cost of assisted living can count toward a monthly medical expense.”
Those interested can register for the Hauppauge seminar by calling 631-582-3334 by Monday. The event will start at 6 p.m. at The Arbors at Hauppauge, 1740 Expressway South, off Exit 55 on the Long Island Expressway.
Seminars will also take place Tuesday at The Arbors at Westbury, Wednesday at The Arbors at Islandia and Thursday at The Arbors at Bohemia.
