Update: The National Weather Service has lifted a severe thunderstorm warning for the area, but not before about 5,000 homes were knocked out of power.
The National Weather Service reported at 7:47 p.m. that storms capable of producing quarter-size hail and damaging winds in excess of 60 mph were near
Coram and Centereach and moving east at 25 mph.
The Weather Service issued a severe thunderstorm warning for Medford, Rocky Point, Middle Island, Yaphank, Brookhaven National Laboratory, Shirley, Wading River, Mastic, Mastic Beach, Manorville, Center Moriches, Calverton, Westhampton and
Riverhead. Other locations may be affected as well.
