Shelter Island Library benefit may outpace 2010

While some pledges are still coming in, Shelter Island Library director Denise DiPaolo expects this year’s Turkey Plunge to exceed the $14,000 taken in last year.

About 175 people took part in the annual run into the water nine days ago, and DiPaolo said the library will end up with between $17,000 and $18,000 to help pay for the renovation of its lower level.

Unlike most libraries, which pay for building improvements through bonds, the planned $700,000 renovation of the building’s lower level will be paid for exclusively through private donations; more than $500,000 has already been raised.

The renovation of the 2,700-square-foot basement area is the first major change to the building since it was constructed in 1965.
