Shelter Island passes budget with 2.5% tax increase

Shelter Island’s town board adopted a 2011 budget on Friday night which raises town taxes next year by 2.5 percent, the lowest tax increase in the town since at least 2003.

The $10,449,830 budget is about $400,000 larger than the current $10,082,584, but increasing revenue from mortgage taxes and other sources meant the amount to be raised from real estate taxes was up by only about $200,000, or $6,662,334 compared to $6,496,728 in 2010.
