A throng of sledders and snowboarders gathered Wednesday on an embankment at Route 231 and Sunrise Highway in West Islip.

They took advantage of the 10 inches of snow Mother Nature dumped overnight on Western Suffolk. The storm closed businesses and schools across Long Island, freeing parents and children to enjoy the day.

For many of the parents, sledding is a tradition. Michael Ameri of West Islip, who was there with son Michael and nephew Dean, said he’s been sledding there since he was a kid.
