Smithtown approves library budget

Residents of the Smithtown Library System approved on Tuesday a $12,181,862 budget for 2011 by a vote of 1,137 to 513.

Total expenditures decreased about $50,000 over last year, bringing down the tax levy by about half a percent.

Incumbents Joseph Vallone and Eric Johansson will return to the library board as the top two vote-getters, 1,223 and 1,221, respectively, for three seats.

Challenger Judith Marlow-Ratway, with 1,095 votes, beat out incumbent Rosalind Palazzolo, who received 836 votes.

Judith Wertheim, who recently dropped out of the race, received 58 votes.
