Jenn O’Brien, 27, of Smithtown has become the first female captain at the 103-year-old Smithtown Fire Department, the department said.

O’Brien, pictured above, who serves on Engine Company 4, is the first female to lead a company as a line officer, which she said means “you run the fire scene — you go into the buildings.” She worked her way up and was elected captain by her company.

“My company’s 100 percent behind me,” she said.

The department's more than 150 members include eight women.

O’Brien, whose father, uncle and cousin are also in the department, said she first volunteered when she was 18. She is studying to become a registered nurse.
