Spring cleaning and a growing awareness of the dangers of hazardous substances are expected to draw many Smithtown residents to dump household waste Saturday at a town facility in Kings Park.

Such collections, held twice a year, have been growing since Smithtown began the program several years ago, town environmental protection director Russell K. Barnett said. Last October, 365 families brought hazardous household wastes to a collection — and Barnett said he thinks even more people will participate on Saturday.

“We’re expecting this event to be our largest to date,” he said. “They seem to continually grow as people become aware of this issue.”

Town employees will collect waste such as expired or out-of-date pesticides, motor oil, antifreeze, brake fluid, pool and cleaning chemicals and lawn care products from 7 a.m. to 3 p.m. at the town Municipal Services Facility, 85 Old Northport Rd., Kings Park.

All items collected will be shipped to a New Jersey firm, Care Environmental, for disposal, Barnett said. The company is licensed by the state Department of Environmental Conservation to dispose hazardous waste, he said.

The spring waste collection is usually more popular than one held in the fall, perhaps because residents clean out their garages and basements when the weather gets warmer, Barnett said.

“We frequently get pesticides that people have left over from days when they were legal, but are now banned,” he said. Chemicals used to develop film also show up as waste collections. “A lot of people no longer do film developing,” he said. “Their chemicals have been sitting around for awhile.”
