The state Department of Environmental Conservation will investigate high levels of chemicals found in groundwater near the site of a former dry cleaner in Westbury and propose ways to address the contamination.
The former Solvent Finishers parcel, at 601 Cantiague Rock Rd., is a class 2 site, which means it represents a significant threat to public health or the environment. The DEC said previous use of dry cleaning fluids led to the contamination.
A 2008 site report found that levels of tetrachloroethene, trichloroethene and other chemicals exceeded groundwater standards. The chemicals were also found in soil and soil vapor samples.
After the investigation is finished, the state will conduct a feasibility study to evaluate how or if to clean the site to ensure public health and the environment are protected.
