State, town agree on playground at park

A new playground will be built by the end of the summer at Veterans Park in Rocky Point, thanks to an agreement between the Town of Brookhaven and the state Department of Environmental Conservation.

The park land is owned by the state and is under the stewardship of the Brookhaven Business Community Alliance, town Councilwoman Jane Bonner said in a news release.

The DEC granted a permit for a playground to be built using a $60,000 grant from Suffolk County Downtown Revitalization funds. If at some point the state decides to reclaim the land, Bonner said, the county has agreed to move the playground equipment to another location in her district.

“After many months working on this project, I am happy to report that we have cut through the red tape to pave the way for the development of this family-friendly playground,” Bonner said in the release. She said the playground is another step in the revitalization of downtown Rocky Point.
