At the Southampton campus of Stony Brook University, the holidays are about windmills and whales.

The Graduate Arts Campus and the School of Marine and Atmospheric Sciences are hosting the traditional holiday lighting of the campus windmill on Friday from 5 to 7 p.m. at Chancellors Hall.

The Southampton High School choral group is scheduled to sing holiday favorites.

The windmill lighting and reception will be followed by a talk at Duke Lecture Hall by Tara Rider Zeiss on Long Island’s whaling heritage, from early whaling by American Indians to the commercialization of industry in the 19th century, according to the school.
