The Long Island State Veterans Home at Stony Brook University is getting a new boiler, thanks to $2.1 million in federal and state funding.
On Tuesday, Sen. Charles Schumer said that the federal Department of Veterans Affairs awarded a $1.4-million grant to the facility. State Sen. John Flanagan announced a state appropriation of another $700,000. The funds will pay for a new boiler system to replace the 20-year-old equipment.
“Long Island veterans risked their lives for this country, and they deserve the best possible care and support,” Schumer said.
The federal funds are “part of the VA construction grant program,” said the home’s director of community relations, Jonathan Spier. The program is a federal-state partnership “that allows state veterans homes to maintain the highest quality of facilities,” he said.
The 350-bed nursing facility opened in 1991 on the campus of Stony Brook University.
