A male was rescued by firefighters early Tuesday morning after a fire broke out in his Hempstead home. The house on Alicia Court was engulfed in flames when emergency units arrived at about 4:30 a.m. Firefighters quickly began to search the home for residents and shortly after found the lone occupant of the house in a room on the first floor. A 71-year-old Hempstead man was hospitalized early Tuesday, suffering from minor burns and smoke inhalation, after being pulled by firefighters from a burning home, Hempstead police said. -- JOHN VALENTI
