Streets in E. Islip to be renamed for fallen buddies

The Islip Town board Wednesday voted to rename two East Islip streets for best friends who died in the line of duty -- one, a New York state police investigator, the other, a Marine killed in Vietnam.

Thomas O'Neill, who served with the state police for 33 years, suffered a fatal heart attack on July 6, 2005, shortly after a struggle with a disorderly suspect.

His childhood friend, John Edward Quillen Jr., was killed in action on Dec. 3, 1967, in Thua Thien, Vietnam, a week after his 19th birthday.

Sherwood Drive East and East Adams East will be renamed at the intersection where they meet -- the same corner where the friends grew up.
