Students continue Halloween tradition in Sayville

For more than 30 years -- no one is exactly sure how long -- the Kiwanis Club of Sayville has sponsored a Halloween art project for students from the Sayville High School and Sayville Middle School, said Kiwanis Club president Roy Fedelem.

In time for Sayville's Halloween parade each year, selected students spend one day out of school painting store windows along Main Street with Halloween themes of their own design.

"People are always telling me they remember when they were a student and did it," Fedelem said.

He said the idea of the program is to empower students.

Sayville Public Schools Art Department chairwoman Julia Lang-Shapiro, who organized the project within the schools, said about 80 students participated this year.
