Suffolk Legislature axes PR position for cops

Suffolk Police Chief Robert Moore announced in an e-mail Friday that the Suffolk Legislature has eliminated the police deparment's director of public information position due to budget cuts. The full release is below.

To our contacts in the media:

We regret to inform you that the Suffolk County Legislature has abolished the Suffolk Police Department’s director of public information position during the recently concluded 2011 budget deliberations.

Those of you who have dealt with our Public Information Office have a keen grasp of the key role the director played in facilitating your requests for fast-breaking and important facts and statistics. It is truly unfortunate that this position was eliminated despite its clear significance in serving the media and public constituencies at large.

We want to assure you that despite this setback, the Suffolk Police Department will continue to do everything possible to facilitate your requests in as timely and accurate a manner as possible, and we ask your patience in dealing with any delays that may be experienced.

Sincerely,

Robert Moore
Chief of Department
Suffolk County Police Department
