The Kings Park Central School District must revise its 2013/2014 calendar due to a conflict with Common Core tests.

The proposed calendar will be discussed at the next board of education meeting on Feb. 26, held at 7:30 p.m. at Kings Park High School.

The state Education Department informed districts that Common Core tests have been scheduled for June 3 and 4 in 2014, said Superintendent Susan Agruso.

“It scheduled the Regents exams a week later than we all expected,” she said, adding that Regents exams must take place after the state receives the Common Core scores.

The end of the school year is now proposed to be June 26, she said, adding, “We were going to end the Friday before.”

“We asked everyone did they want us to start school on Sept. 9 for students?” Agruso said. “What our union did, they actually voted to have our teachers come in on the last week of August, so our students will come in on Sept. 3 and 4.”

The new proposed calendar version “D” was introduced during the Feb. 5 school board meeting and is now posted on the district website. According to this schedule, school would start for teachers on Aug. 28 and for students on Sept. 3.
