The whale is dead. Really. No, really

The nightmare is over. After more than three days lying in the shallow waters off Main Beach in East Hampton, the baby humpback whale has died.

Critics charged that the whale either should have been euthanized or somehow saved, despite experts' insistence that there was no way to keep it alive.

Today brought many strange twists.

First, officials said it died overnight. Then it was alive again. Then it might have been shot. Then a tranquilizer dart was lost in the ocean.

Then, finally, it was euthanized. It died just after 11 a.m.

Poor little guy.
