With between 10,000 and 20,000 people expected to come to downtown Riverhead on Sunday to attend the Riverhead Country Fair, a lot of people are looking at weather reports.

That’s because, if it rains, the open-air fair will be put off one day, until Monday.

It’s the 37th edition of the annual Columbus Day weekend fair and — because it takes up most of the downtown municipal parking lots along the Peconic River — town officials close off all streets leading to East Main Street, including Peconic Avenue which crosses the Peconic River from Southampton Town.

Fair officials do not expect to make a final decision on postponing the fair until sometime Saturday. Updates will be put on the fair’s recorded phone line, 631-727-1215.
