Town may limit ATV use on private property

A public hearing will be held next month on a new law that would limit the use of recreational all-terrain vehicles on private property in the Town of Huntington.

The Huntington Town Board, which voted last week to increase the penalty for unlawful riding of recreational vehicles, such as dirt bikes and all-terrain vehicles, is considering limiting use of the vehicles on private property.

The proposed legislation would outlaw ATV use on private property if the vehicle is loud enough to violate the town’s noise ordinance, and would prohibit operating a vehicle on private property between 6 p.m. and 9 a.m. within 200 feet of a dwelling.

The public hearing will take place on Oct. 11.
