Event to focus on Fire Island’s recovery
The New York Rising Community Reconstruction Program will host a public event focused on Fire Island’s recovery from recent severe storms such as superstorm Sandy and Tropical Storm Irene.
The event will be held from 9:30 a.m. to 12:30 p.m. Saturday at the Bay Shore-Brightwaters Library, 1 South Country Rd., Brightwaters.
The event is an open house and residents are encouraged to drop in at any point. Residents can share information and recommendations with the Community Reconstruction Planning Committee.

Town sponsors holiday celebration
Port Washington will prepare for the winter holidays with a three-hour celebration Wednesday.
The fourth annual “Port Holiday Magic” will take place from 5 to 8 p.m. along Main Street, and will feature decorations, lights and free rides between Port Washington Boulevard and the town dock on a trolley sponsored by the Town of North Hempstead.
Businesses will offer discounts, a raffle and activities for children, including clowns from the Big Apple Circus, dancers and musicians.
A menorah lighting for the eighth night of Hanukkah will take place at 6 p.m. at the Port Washington Long Island Rail Road station.
The event is sponsored by several business and civic groups, along with the town.
