Colorful banners hung on the fence surrounding Firemen’s Memorial Field during Valley Stream Central High School’s homecoming game. For this year’s homecoming theme, the school chose Celebrating Diversity.
“To me, diversity is what makes a person stand out in a crowd,” said Courtney Ofeimun, 17, this year’s homecoming queen.
Before the football game, 15 clubs marched around the field displaying banners decorated with painted banners representing different cultures and ethnicities as well as anti-bullying slogans.
“I really like how, since we’re all seniors, we’re finishing this journey together as our last homecoming, and it’s just something really important that we stay united for this and all other school events,” said Diego Suarez-Rojas, 17.
As students, faculty members and family cheered on the Valley Stream Central Eagles at their homecoming game at Firemen’s Memorial Field, temperatures rose as quickly as the Eagles scored touchdown after touchdown against the Hicksville Comets.
“There’s just an enthusiasm that’s very genuine and a positive school spirit,” said principal Joseph Pompilio, 54, about the Saturday night pep rally.
The Eagles were victorious with their Homecoming King Vincent Vecchione playing center.
