The Valley Stream Fire Department plans to mark a milestone Saturday with what officials say will be one of the largest celebrations in the village’s history.
To mark the 100th birthday of the department’s Engine Company No. 1, the village will hold a parade along Rockaway Parkway featuring more than 25 volunteer fire departments from across Long Island. The parade will end at the Valley Stream Village Green, where a block party will feature food, children’s activities and a concert by the Billy Joel tribute band Big Shot.
Department Chief Joseph Fernandez said he is looking forward to reuniting with village firefighters from years gone by and trading stories about the century-old engine company, which began with a horse-drawn hose wagon in 1911.
“We’re still going strong,” said Fernandez, who oversees about 240 members in the department. “For a volunteer organization, and with the time demands of nowadays, it’s unbelievable that we still have that many active members.”
The parade is scheduled to begin at Wheeler Avenue and Morris Parkway at 6 p.m.
