Veterans offered free rides to event

Military veterans who live in Suffolk County’s Third Legislative District are eligible for free door-to-door transportation to the Stand Down at Suffolk Community College’s Brentwood campus April 29, according to county Legis. Kate Browning (WF-Shirley), who represents the district.

The Stand Down is an event for veterans to learn about health, employment, housing, financial, educational and Veteran Affairs benefit services from public and private agencies. The event will include stations offering free eyeglasses and haircuts, clothing and a food pantry.

The event will be from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. at the Health, Sports and Education Center.

“This is an important event for veterans in need,” Browning said. “I want to make sure that anyone interested has the ability to attend, and transportation can be difficult for many of our local veterans. I hope they take advantage of this free service and contact my office.”

Veterans in the district — which covers much of the south-central part of the Town of Brookhaven — can arrange transportation by calling Browning’s office at 631-852-1300.

For veterans outside the district, information about other transportation options is available at the Suffolk County Veterans Services Agency, 631-853-8387.
