Bernard Hoffman, 80, of Merrick, attends the American Legion Merrick Post 1282 barbecue. Hoffman served in the Army between 1952 and 1954 in combat during the Korean War. Two years ago, he went back for the 60th anniversary of the war. "When I went at first there were mountains, rice patties and shacks and now they seem more modern than Long Island," he said.
