Video: Crosswalk for visually impaired installed in C. Islip

An audible crosswalk for the visually impaired was installed in front of Central Islip High School on Thursday, a project set in motion years ago by a complaint from a parent of a blind student, said Principal Franklin Caesar.

That student has since graduated, Caesar said, but the project was seen to fruition by the Central Islip Lions Club and the Suffolk County Department of Public Works, both of which are working together to install more audible crosswalks at busy intersections across Long Island.

The crosswalk is located at the intersection of Wheeler and Adams roads and will audibly instruct walkers crossing either street when the light is red and when they can walk. The machine also counts down the seconds left before the traffic light turns green again.
