Volunteers needed for Islip cleanup

Keep Islip Clean is looking for volunteers for the nonprofit’s 22nd annual Brook Street Wetlands Cleanup on Saturday.

Volunteers will clean up roads as well as acres of wetlands on Brook Street near Commack Road from 9:30 a.m. to 11 a.m., said Nancy Cochran, executive director of the organization.

“It’s a very environmentally sensitive and important area,” she said. “This is one of the few areas that is still undeveloped nature.”

Last year, dozens of volunteers recovered more than 80 bags of trash, Cochran said. Debris included discarded wood and metal, several chairs, televisions and a couch, she said.

Anyone interested in volunteering should meet on Brook Street near Commack Road at 9:30 a.m. Saturday. For more information, contact Keep Islip Clean at 631-224-2627.
