Voters OK library budget on Shelter Island

Voters on Shelter Island have approved a 2012 library budget by a 2-1 margin, a $577,691 spending plan that is nearly 1 percent less than the current $583,100, but which nonetheless is expected to raise the tax rate by 4.5 percent.

Library officials said taxes would have to go up about $4.50 for a typical family because private contributions have decreased.

The vote on Saturday was 122 to 62 in favor of approval. Polling had to be held in Shelter Island High School because the library basement is currently being renovated.
