SURF’S UP. The first day of competition of the abbreviated Quiksilver Pro New York surfing tourney begins Monday at the beach along National Boulevard in Long Beach. Check staff updates at newsday.com

SCHOOL DAYS.  More than 60 public school district welcome students back Tuesday for the beginning of the 2011-2012 academic year. Most of the remaining districts open their doors to students Wednesday. Check updates from John Hildebrand, Joie Tyrrell and Jo Napolitano at newsday.com.
