Women’s group gives $20G in grants

Meadowbrook Women’s Initiative presented three grants totaling $20,000 during its second annual philanthropic awards last week.

The recipients are the Hofstra University School of Medicine, the Long Island Alzheimer's Foundation and the Martin C. Barell School of the Nassau/Suffolk Services for Autism. The ceremony was held June 29 at the East Meadow Jewish Center.

“Since we have no overhead and all of our members are volunteers, the monies that we raise go directly to Long Island-based charities,” Lori Schonfeld of Island Park, president of the women’s service organization that has more than 450 members, said in a statement. “I am delighted and proud that we have once again met and surpassed our goals.”

Hofstra’s medical school, which is scheduled to open in August, will be awarded a yearly donation of $8,000 that will provide a summer scholarship for a local student to work at a clinic or inner-city hospital where they might otherwise not be paid. The other two organizations will receive $6,000 each.
