Lightning forces emergency landing at Kennedy Airport

A plane bound for LaGuardia Airport hit a wave of turbulence and was struck by lightning in midflight Thursday night, Port Authority officials said, forcing the pilot to make an emergency landing at nearby Kennedy Airport.

No injuries were reported.

The American Airlines flight from Raleigh, North Carolina, which was operated by Republic Airlines, was hit shortly before 6 p.m. and landed at about 6:15 p.m., a Port Authority spokesman said.

American Airlines spokesman Ross Feinstein said the aircraft carried 55 passengers.

“The plane encountered weather during final approach and was diverted to JFK,” he said.
