The Long Island Rail Road experienced two interruptions in service Thursday when a truck struck a bridge in Garden City about 6 p.m. and seven hours earlier, when a rail snapped during the late morning commute.
Spokeswoman Nancy Gamerman said the 5:30 p.m. accident delayed the westbound 5:41 p.m. train from Hempstead to Penn Station by 15 minutes, and the 6:02 p.m. train from Hempstead to Atlantic Terminal in Brooklyn by 11 minutes.
The LIRR restored train service on the West Hempstead Branch about 3:35 p.m., after a rail broke on the line at Valley Stream.
LIRR officials had suspended trains in both directions due to the incident. The railroad had also said it would have buses as a replacement after the problem was reported about 11 a.m.
