LIRR: Ronkonkoma Branch service restored after train hits vehicle

Service on the Long Island Rail Road's Ronkonkoma Branch, between Hicksville and Ronkonkoma, has been restored after a train hit a vehicle near Bethpage station, the LIRR said.

Nassau County police said a man was driving a vehicle along Merritts Road in Farmingdale just before 4:14 p.m. when his vehicle stalled on the track. The driver was not hurt because he abandoned the vehicle before a train hit it, police said.

The train involved was the 3:13 p.m. from Penn Station due in Ronkonkoma at 4:35 p.m.

Service was temporarily suspended in both directions for more than an hour. Service was restored around 5:30 p.m. but the LIRR said customers should "anticipate residual delays of up to 90 minutes.
