Family and friends of victims of TWA Flight 800 attended a memorial ceremony at Smith Point County Park in Shirley on the 19th anniversary of the crash on July 17, 2015. The Paris-bound jet exploded and crashed into the ocean off East Moriches shortly after takeoff from Kennedy Airport in 1996, killing all 230 people aboard.
