A truck driver with ties to Valley Stream was killed in a freak accident in Indiana early Thursday when he struck his head on a concrete post at a toll booth while reaching for a ticket, Indiana State Police said.
An accident report said Jaroslaw Lelis, 47, died of massive head trauma, police said.
The accident occurred at about 2 a.m. on the Indiana Toll Road near Portage, which is just east of Gary, Ind., along the shores of Lake Michigan.
Police said Lelis had backed up after passing the toll booth in the i-ZOOM lane - the equivalent of the E-ZPass lane - after his truck apparently failed to register with sensors.
Police said he had opened the door to his tractor-trailer to reach for a ticket at the toll booth when the truck continued to roll backward, crushing his head between the truck door and a concrete post.
Lelis' driver's license was issued to a Valley Stream address, according to New York State Department of Motor Vehicles records.
