A man faces hate crime and criminal mischief charges in two incidents at a Freeport church, police said Sunday.

Nassau County police said Victor Wilson, 49, damaged floodlights at Our Holy Redeemer Catholic Church on Friday, according to videotape surveillance. On Saturday around midnight, Wilson placed clothing over the heads of statues in the church garden, also breaking one, police said.

Wilson was apprehended by police about 6 a.m. Saturday and charged with first-degree aggravated harassment, a hate crime of second-degree criminal mischief, and fourth-degree criminal mischief.

Police said they recognized Wilson from previous incidents, including a 2013 arrest for a statue theft at the same Freeport church, 37 S. Ocean Ave. Freeport Village Police declined to comment.
