Eleanore Wurtzel of Great Neck has been named a fellow of the American Society of Plant Biologists based on her work on carotenoid biosynthesis, which aims to eliminate vitamin A deficiency, a leading cause of blindness and increased mortality among children in the developing world. Wurtzel is a biological sciences professor at Lehman College in the Bronx, which she joined in 1987. She also served six years on the society's Minority Affairs Committee and four years as monitoring editor of Plant Physiology, the society's journal.
