What's new on the runways for Spring 2014? "It's more of a continuation of what we've been seeing, but the good news is that you don't have to run out and buy a whole new wardrobe," says celebrity stylist and reality TV star Brad Goreski.

Sooooo, what to buy? Goreski suggests a skirt with a new silo (flippy, flared) paired with one of the season's ubiquitous crop tops or even a T-shirt. Avril Graham, Harper's Bazaar executive beauty and fashion editor, advises adding a bit of retro with mod, shorter body-skimming shifts, or '50s-style nipped waists along with an unstructured jacket. And, she says, while neutrals reigned supreme, "we're seeing some welcome bursts of colors."

As for the -- shudder -- crop-top trend? "Those who dare can certainly wear a midriff- baring top." But, says Graham, with finger pointed for emphasis, "You better be prepared to spend every, and I mean every, waking moment at the gym." Yikes.

Have a look at some of the trends for spring. -- Anne Bratskeir

Black and white all-over

Yes, black and white ruled this season. But some designers took a more colorful path with shades of coral, soft pastels and eye-popping neons. Also, loads of mint and oddly, variations on the traditionally winter hue of brown for an earthy take on spring. Here, a fresh take on black and white from the Jill Stuart spring 2014 New York Fashion Week show at Lincoln Center in Manhattan. (Sept. 7, 2013)

The belly-blast

It’'s not our favorite trend, but virtually everyone had a perfectly taut tummy on their runway -- high-enders and department store brands alike. Slashes, slits and open backs added to the big reveal. And if you couldn’t see clearly enough, well there was loads of transparency -- see-through fabrics that revealed what lies beneath…in many cases bandeau bras and high-waisted undies, as pictured here at the Milly By Michelle Smith New York Fashion Week show at Lincoln Center in Manhattan. It’s a short story

Shorts and not necessarily too short or too tight (some went Bermuda) are next season’s must have. And they’re not just for daytime. Some designers turned out formal ensembles for fancy gigs. California chic

Surfer and scuba looks abounded, as many designers went West Coast for inspiration. Included in the mix: A new/retro higher cut bikini, rash guard shirts in neoprene, wetsuit-inspired pants and even a scuba evening gown. In the same vein, athletic mesh became a must, built into unexpected places. Here, a twist on the swimsuit by Kenneth Cole at his New York Fashion Week show at The Garage in Manhattan. Posies popped

Spring sprung florals everywhere. Our faves included giant blossoms, abstract vintage looks, oh those Hawaiian blooms on Tommy Hilfiger’s Hawaiian leather shirtdresses. Marc Jacobs gave the spring trend a darker twist at his New York Fashion Week show at the Lexington Avenue Armory in Manhattan. (Sept. 12, 2013)

Float fest

Loose, floating garments were the antidote to that cropped top and that's good news. Billowing dresses, slouchy pants, and fluttery skirts gave a little breathing room and were oh-so-lovely. Here, a flowing number at the Donna Karan New York Fashion Week show in Manhattan. (Sept. 9, 2013)
