NEWARK - Newark firefighters are mourning the death of a long-time member of their family.

Station 18 announced the loss of firehouse dog Lucy on Friday evening. Firefighters say Lucy was well-known in the community, and often went on calls with Engine 18 and Battalion 4.

"Every kid in the neighborhood would come by, stop and pet her," says firefighter Rick Mackey.

Lucy was 12 years old and died of cancer, according to firefighters.

In 2006, Lucy made headlines when an undercover narcotics officer fired shots at her when she ran toward him outside the firehouse. Department members say they believe she was trying to help when she saw an officer making an arrest.

The firehouse has not announced details on a memorial for Lucy.
