Baseball report: Soriano leads Cubs as they pound Halladay

Alfonso Soriano hit his 17th home run and had three RBIs, leading a 14-hit attack for the host Chicago Cubs in an 11-6 thumping of the Philadelphia Phillies last night. Derrek Lee and Geovany Soto also had three RBIs each. Roy Halladay (10-8) gave up six runs in six innings and took the loss.

Alex Sanabia pitched into the sixth inning to earn his first major-league win and four relievers helped host Florida shut out Washington. Loser Craig Stammen gave up a run in six innings.

Matt Holliday drove in the winning run with two outs in the ninth as host St. Louis rallied from a four-run deficit to finish off a four-game sweep.

Chris Denorfia homered twice and had four hits, and Heath Bell collected his 26th save to complete a three-game sweep for host San Diego.

Paul Maholm pitched a three-hitter for host Pittsburgh. The Pirates collected 19 hits.

C.J. Wilson struck out a career-high 10 for visiting Texas as the Red Sox lost for the eighth time in 11 games. Julio Borbon stole home in the fifth for the Rangers when Boston catcher Dusty Brown threw to second in an attempt to cut down Elvis Andrus.

Delmon Young capped a four-run ninth with a two-run single for host Minnesota. The Twins won three of four in the series to move within 11/2 games of first-place Chicago.

Indians 7, Tigers 2

Jhonny Peralta's fly ball sent Detroit's Ryan Rayburn crashing through a bullpen door for an inside-the-park homer and Jeanmar Gomez won his major-league debut as host Cleveland beat the Tigers to complete a four-game sweep.

Blue Jays 10, Orioles 1

Yunel Escobar hit a grand slam during a six-run second inning for visiting Toronto.

Athletics 9, Royals 6

Adam Rosales, Kevin Kouzmanoff and Jack Cust homered and Vin Mazzaro pitched into the eighth inning for visiting Oakland. The A's have won five straight and 12 of 18 to even their record at 46-46.

Mariners 2, Angels 1

Jose Lopez hit a tiebreaking RBI single in the 10th inning in Anaheim.- AP
