Bong used by Phelps confiscated by sheriff's department

COLUMBIA, S.C. - The bong used by Olympic swimmer Michael Phelps has been confiscated by the sheriff's department after its owner tried to sell it on eBay for $100,000, WIS-TV reported on its Web site.

In addition, eight people have been arrested in connection with Phelps' admission that he smoked from the bong in November during a party in South Carolina, WIS said. Seven people were charged by the Richland County Sheriff´s Department for possession of marijuana, while one person was charged with distribution, the television station said, without citing its source or identifying those arrested.

A photograph of Phelps smoking from the water pipe, which is commonly used to inhale marijuana, was published Feb. 1 by the News of the World in Britain, and Phelps admitted that day that the photo was authentic and apologized for his actions.

Sheriff Leon Lott told WIS that Phelps, who won a record eight gold medals at the Beijing Olympics in August, may be charged with simple possession of marijuana. Phelps has been training at a pool in his hometown of Baltimore.
