Chargers gain ground on Chiefs in AFC West

As the Jaguars trudged into the locker room down 10 points at halftime, Maurice Jones-Drew called a meeting. The Jaguars responded - in a big way.

David Garrard, Rashad Jennings and Jones-Drew led a barrage of big plays - just enough to offset Darren McFadden's three-TD day - as the host Jaguars beat the Raiders, 38-31, yesterday in a game that featured six TDs of at least 30 yards.

"It meant something because it came from him," said Mike Sims-Walker, who caught a touchdown pass. "He's not a talkative guy, a loud person. We came out and fed off it."

Jones-Drew's 30-yard TD won it. He could have gone down at the 1-yard line and taken some time off the clock - as he did last year against the Jets - but he wanted the TD, saying, "It's been a long time since I've been in there."

The Jags (8-5) have won five of six and next play the Colts, whom they lead by one game in the AFC South. Oakland is 6-7.

Chargers 31, Chiefs 0

Philip Rivers threw two TDs to Malcom Floyd as host San Diego (7-6) moved to within one game of Kansas City (8-5).

Troy Polamalu and LaMarr Woodley returned interceptions of Carson Palmer for TDs as host Pittsburgh (10-3) dealt Cincinnati (2-11) a franchise-record 10th straight loss.

Buccaneers 17, Redskins 16

A flubbed extra-point attempt with nine seconds left kept host Washington (5-8) from tying it after Santana Moss' 6-yard TD catch. Nick Sundberg's high snap on a wet field went through holder Hunter Smith's hands.

Josh Freeman hit Kellen Winslow on a 41-yard TD with 3:47 left for Tampa Bay (8-5).

Saints 31, Rams 13

Drew Brees threw for three TDs and Malcolm Jenkins returned one of his two INTs 96 yards for his first career TD as host New Orleans (10-3) won its sixth straight. St. Louis (6-7) remained in a first-place tie with Seattle (6-7) in the NFC West. 49ers 40, Seahawks 21

Alex Smith threw for 255 yards and three TDs in a triumphant return to the starting lineup as host San Francisco (5-8) moved within a game of first in the NFC West.

Falcons 31, Panthers 10

Michael Turner ran for 112 yards and three TDs for visiting Atlanta (11-2). Carolina (1-12) has lost seven straight.

Bills 13, Browns 6

Buffalo (3-11) knocked Cleveland (5-8) out of playoff contention.

Cardinals 43, Broncos 13

Jay Feely became the fourth kicker in 40 years to run for a TD and added five field goals as host Arizona (4-9) snapped a seven-game losing streak. Denver is 3-10.- AP
