Sour cream cake doughnut is Dunkin' winner

A glazed, sour cream cake doughnut topped with Heath Bar beat out a Long Islander's creation made up of Oreos, Marshmallow Fluff and graham crackers in a contest, Dunkin' Donuts announced Friday. The entry from Laura Sherland, 20, of Smithtown - called S'mOREO - won a public vote online last month. But the grand prize winner was based 30 percent on that vote and 70 percent on the results of a bake-off in Braintree, Mass. Jeff Hager of Hoover, Ala., created the winning submission called Toffee For Your Coffee. His doughnut will be sold at participating stores nationwide in September and he received a $12,000 prize. "I'm really excited for him that he won," Sherland said Friday. Sherland, who will be a junior at Marist College in Poughkeepsie, was one of a dozen finalists out of nearly 130,000 entries. She won $1,200 and a $360 Dunkin' Donuts gift card. "It would have been really cool to win because I was so close," she said, but she enjoyed being able to be in the test kitchen at the Dunkin' Donuts University and try the other doughnuts. "I had a lot of fun," she said.
