CARRYING THE TRADITION
Long Island scholastic men's lacrosse player Kyle Keenan of Smithtown West has an interesting Empire State Games history. His mother, Bridget, played in the 1992 Empire State Games in women's open soccer - while she was in the early stages of pregnancy carrying Kyle.
"But she didn't know it until after the Games," said Kyle's father, Sean, lacrosse coach at Smithtown West. "She was sick a little bit, but she played on. Then she found out she was pregnant."
Bridget's team won the silver medal that year. Her son, who plays with the first attack, goes for the gold Sunday against CentralBASEBALL RAINED OUT
Rain forced postponement of the scholastic baseball gold-medal game, so Long Island will face Central Sunday, right after the completion of the bronze-medal game that was suspended Saturday.
LACROSSE GOLD DIGGING
The scholastic men's and women's lacrosse teams will play for the gold medal Sunday. The undefeated women face Western at 11 a.m. at Niagara University. The men, who lost to Central, 8-7, in overtime Friday night, will face Central in a rematch at Canisius College at noon.
THIRD PLACE ISN'T BAD
The L.I. men's and women's scholastic soccer teams play for the bronze at 8:30 a.m. Sunday . . . In basketball, the L.I. scholastic men and women are in bronze-medal games. Open men's basketball is playing for the bronze against Adirondack at 8 a.m.
