Former Gov. Carey's prognosis good after surgery

Former New York Gov. Hugh L. Carey is "sitting and talking" a day after undergoing heart surgery.

That's the word from his surgeon.

Dr. O. Wayne Isom said Friday that the 90-year-old patient will remain in the hospital for about five to six days.

The double bypass surgery was performed Thursday at New York-Presbyterian Hospital/Weill Cornell Medical Center.

Isom said Carey's prognosis is good.

Says the doctor: "He's 90 years old. We'll try to get him to a 100."

Carey was at his winter home in Gulf Stream, Fla., when he had shortness of breath. He was flown to New York for the operation.

Carey, a Democrat, was governor from 1975 to 1983. He served seven terms in Congress before that. -- AP
