As a result of bacteria found at levels higher than state standards, seven beaches in Suffolk County have been closed to swimming, health officials said Tuesday.

They are: Amityville Village Beach; Copiague Harbor (Great South Bay) and Tanner Park Beach, Copiague; Venetian Shores Beach, Lindenhurst; Gold Star Battalion Park Beach, Huntington; Nathan Hale Beach Club, Huntington Bay; and the lake at Peconic Dunes County Park, Southold.

Swimming in such contaminated water “can result in gastrointestinal illness, as well as infections of the eyes, ears, nose and throat,” said a health department release.

To learn more and stay up to date on affected beaches, residents can call the county’s bathing beach hotline at 631-852-5822 or check
